Worldwide Ecommerce Sales Projections Through 2019 (eMarketer)

Posted by:

eMarketer released their Worldwide Ecommerce Sales Report with projections through 2019 showing that in-store retail sales will still command an 87% share.  While worldwide retail sales continue to grow, it’s a bit surprising that ecommerce related sales still trail by that large of a margin (especially in the North American market).  From the executive summary of the eMarketer report:

“Worldwide retail sales—including in-store and internet purchases—will
surpass $22 trillion in 2015, up 5.6% from 2014. Retail ecommerce sales,
those purchased over the internet, will make up 7.4% of the total retail market
worldwide, or $1.671 trillion. By 2019, that share will jump to $3.578 trillion,
yet retail ecommerce will account for just 12.8% of retail purchases.”

As the report shows, not every worldwide market is the same when it comes to ecommerce sales vs. in-store sales.  The Asia-Pacific market is projected to have a 20% ecommerce share of total retail sales by 2019 compared to the North American market with only a 9.7% ecommerce share by 2019.  You can view all the different regions and their projected ecommerce share projections below.

What isn’t shown in the report are how omnichannel shopping trends such as webrooming are being counted as an in-store or ecommerce related sale.  It seems that as ecommerce grows, webrooming will grow proportionally.  Hopefully someone will break down that data at some point.

There is some great regional data and retail projections in the eMarketer report and you can download it here.
