Recent Augmented Reality Virtual Dressing Room Use Cases

Posted by:

2 years ago, we published a blog post outlining how brands and retailers were utilizing Augmented Reality Virtual Dressing Room technology. Those examples included how MLB used virtual dressing room technology at their on-site store at the MLB All-Star game to how University of San Diego was leveraging the technology in their bookstore to sell USD apparel.

Since that initial post, we have had quite a few more retailers and brands license Zugara’s WSS for Kiosks Virtual Dressing Room technology so thought it would be a good time to outline a few new virtual dressing room use cases we have seen over the last 2 years. We’ll go into detail below how Chick-fil-A, Delta Airlines, Lands’ End, Golfino and the North Carolina Museum of Art have deployed virtual dressing room technology in vastly different ways.

Delta Airlines Uses Augmented Reality To Unveil New Uniforms.

DELTA AIRLINES – FASHION SHOW USE CASE

In late 2016, Delta Airlines wanted to debut the new uniforms they had created for all Delta employees – from airline attendants to ground crew members. Delta chose to hold a Fashion Show where Delta employees could try on all the new uniforms virtually. 6 Kiosk units were deployed for the Fashion Show event and featured over 50 different garments – including top and bottom garment combinations.

Post event, the Kiosk units were moved to different Delta Airline hubs across the country where employees who could not attend the event, were able to view and try on the new uniforms virtually.

More info from the fashion show including kiosk photos and user photos can be found here.

CHICK-FIL-A – UNIFORM DEBUT USE CASE

In early 2017, Chick-Fil-A debuted a WSS Virtual Dressing Room kiosk at their annual event for franchisee operators. This event showcases new technology being considered for Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country. WSS was utilized to showcase the new uniforms that Chick-fil-A would be debuting later that year. Franchisee operators could view both male and female garments and give feedback to Chick-fil-A corporate executives at the event.

NCMA Virtual Dressing Room

NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART – INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT USE CASE

In October 2017, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) hosted a 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair exhibit. To make the exhibit more interactive for museum visitors, NCMA dedicated a specific area of the exhibit to feature WSS virtual dressing room technology. Visitors could cycle through virtual representations of the different items featured in the exhibit and try them on.

Golfino Virtual Dressing Room Kiosk

GOLFINO – IN-STORE RETAIL & EVENT SALES TOOL

In late 2017, Golfino utilized virtual dressing room technology in 2 very different ways. Golfino is a high-end Golf apparel retailer and wanted to showcase their apparel items to both customers and B2B clients. Golfino featured the WSS Virtual Dressing Room technology in-store for customer use and also featured the WSS tech at a B2B event to showcase Golfino apparel virtual for respective buyers.

We’ll be sharing more info on the Golfino use case soon and will update this blog post with link to more information at that time.

LANDS’ END – B2B PROTOTYPING & PROMOTION

Also in late 2017, Lands’ End deployed virtual dressing room technology in their corporate office. Lands’ End Business unit prototypes various apparel for their business customers (i.e. uniforms, branded apparel, etc.) The specific use case, in this instance, was to leverage WSS virtual dressing room technology as a virtual prototyping tool. When Lands’ End business customers visited the corporate office to view initial apparel prototypes, they could virtually try on the virtual apparel to give feedback. Outside of general consumer engagement at events, we feel the customer prototyping use case is one of the strongest and most effective current use cases for virtual dressing room technology.

We’ll be sharing more info on the Lands’ End use case (including photos) in the near future.

SUMMARY

In a recent Harris Interactive Digital Consumer Survey for Accenture, 21,000 respondents from 19 countries were asked to list their top Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality use cases. “To visualize how clothes might fit” was one of the top use cases selected for Augmented Reality. In a previous Accenture study, Virtual Dressing Rooms were also rated highest Augmented Reality use case for retail conversions.

At the heart of virtual dressing room technology is customer engagement. Through various deployments of the technology from events to in-store, the common thread we have seen is extended customer engagement. Put simply, people have fun when using virtual dressing room simulations. While the technology is not yet mature enough to offer precise virtual fit or sizing recommendations, virtual dressing room technology does have some interesting and effective use cases that induces engagement that can directly or indirectly lead to potential sales.
